Chocolate Covered Orange Slices

These chocolate orange slices are really yummy. I first had them years ago on a weekend trip with my parents to Belgium. Then I totally forgot about them until the year I tried to save money by making hampers of homemade goodies and treats for family and friends (I didn’t actually save any cash! I ended up spending the same amount of money on ingredients and all my spare time up to my eyeballs in sugar, chocolate and ribbons) it was a nice idea though. I can’t actually remember where I got this particular recipe from but it’s so easy to remember (1 cup sugar 1.5 cups water then enough orange slices for 1 layer in the pan) it’s stayed in my head. Place a few into a nice box with some greaseproof paper and they make a great Christmas gift, use them to decorate a cake or just eat them as an after dinner treat.   


Chocolate Covered Orange Slices

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 60 minutes
Makes: 20 slices


225g granulated sugar

240 ml water

3 – 4 small oranges or satumas

100g dark chocolate

1tsp sea salt


Place the sugar and water into the biggest frying pan you have and put on a medium heat. Stir the mixture occasionally until the  sugar has dissolved.

Whilst the pan is heating up slice the oranges thinly leaving the peel on.

When the sugar mixture starts to bubble place the orange slices into the pan and turn the heat down to its lowest setting.

Cook for 60 – 75 minutes, turning the slices every 15 minutes, until the orange peel goes sort or translucent and the sugar and water turns to a thick orange sticky syrup.

With a fork take the orange slices out of the pan and place onto a cooling rack. Set aside and allow to cool completely.

Break the chocolate into pieces and place into a small jug or mug. Microwave for 1 minute then stir well. If the chocolate is not all melted cook in the microwave for 15 seconds then stir well again. Keep doing this until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Dip each orange slice into the the chocolate halfway, allow the excess chocolate to drip off then place the slices into greaseproof paper. Before the chocolate sets sprinkle the chocolate on each slice with a little sea salt. Allow to cool then enjoy.

Store them in a airtight container and they will keep for 2 weeks.
